dot Why should my child attend St. Louis School?
St. Louis school provides an atmosphere that supports the Christian values of Jesus and respect for others.  Class sizes are small allowing for each child to have their individual needs met.  Our school has supportive and talented teachers to help students reach their fullest potential.  Supportive and talented parents provide their knowledge and expertise to make a well-rounded education.

dot How much is tuition for grades kindergarten - 6th?
The kindergarten-6th grade tuition for the 2009-10 school year is $1,500 per student. This equates to about $8.30 per day.   Financial assistance for tuition is available based on financial need.

dot How much is preschool tuition?
Preschool tuition for a half day is $18 and a full day is $28 for the 2009-10 school year. Annually, St. Louis School works with the Washburn School District to come to an agreement on a collaborative 4 year old kindergarten (4K).   Upon approval, the collaboration allows all St. Louis 4K students who are from the Washburn School District to attend 4K classes at St. Louis for free.
 
dot What other fees are there?
There are several field trips that require fees to be paid at the time of the event, but many outings require no additional fee.

dot What are school hours?
School begins at 8:20 am and is dismissed at 3:10 pm.  Half day preschool ends at 11:00 am.

dot When does registration begin?
New students can register year round.  Preschool and kindergarteners can register at the open house during Catholic Schools Week in January.  Registration for current students for the fall begins in March and April once the tuition rates and budget is set for the coming school year.

dot Do you need to be Catholic to attend St. Louis School?
Students do not need to be Catholic to attend St. Louis School.  About 40% of our students are of other faiths and attend because of the Christian values being taught and our reputation of academic excellence.

dot What is expected of me as a parent?
The actual cost to provide an education to your child is approximately $4,300, but tuition is set at an affordable amount.  We ask you, therefore, to help us by providing your time and talent to the best of your ability.  There are several fundraising events and activities throughout the year that would not be successful without the help of our parents. There are opportunities to share your talents with the classrooms through volunteering as an aide or presenter.   In addition, you will be assigned one week per family of playground duty to assist faculty in keeping your children safe. 

dot Is bussing available?
Bussing is provided for students who live in the Washburn School District.  Many of our students who live out of the Washburn School District arrange for carpools to get to and from school.

dot Are uniforms required?
Uniforms are not required.  Students are encouraged to wear school colors (blue and gold) on Thursday to show school spirit.  School logo sweatshirts and t-shirts are available for purchase from the school office for a reasonable fee.

dot Is hot lunch available for students?
St. Louis School serves the federally funded hot lunch program that is purchased through the Washburn Public School. Free and reduced price hot lunch is available to students who apply and qualify for it.  The 2008-09 cost for a one full price hot lunch is $2.50 and $.40 for reduced price lunch.   The cost for milk is $.30.

dot What extra curricular activities are offered?
Basketball, tennis and cheerleading are available for students to participate in after school.  We also have lessons given to students through independent vendors during the school day for piano, guitar and art through out the week.  In addition, our school has down-hill skiing, ice-skating and swimming as part of our physical education curriculum.

dot What unique opportunities are available for students?
The students participate in numerous Art and Cultural experiences along with lifelong sport-leisure skills developed in the Physical Education curriculum.  These are enhanced with field trips to such places as the Duluth Playhouse, Duluth Symphony, Big Top Chautauqua, Mount Ashwabay, Washburn Ice Rink and  Bayfield Recreation Center to name a few.

dot How do the student test scores compare to other schools in the area?
Student test scores from the Iowa Test of Basic Skills have averaged consistently higher than the national average.  The 4th grade Knowledge and Concepts Wisconsin State Test results show that the majority of our students are at or above the proficiency level. Keep in mind that due to small class size, the results of just one low score has a greater affect on the average because it accounts for a higher percentage of the total.

dot What curriculum does St. Louis School follow?
St. Louis school follows the Diocese of Superior Curriculum, which includes the Wisconsin State Standards along with our diocesan expectations of what students should learn.

dot What technology is available for students?
All classrooms have computers that are connected to the internet and are used daily by the students.

dot What musical opportunities are available?
A teacher provides vocal music education to the children on a regular basis.  In addition, children are encouraged to sing as participation in Holy Mass twice per week.  Every child has the chance to be a song leader during mass.  Private piano and guitar lessons are offered during school time by an outside instructor for a fee.

dot What are the class sizes?
Our school has a 1:13 teacher to pupil ratio.  Our class sizes allow us to give individualized instruction to every student.

dot How long have most of the teachers been at St. Louis?
Four of our five teachers have been in the field of education for over 15 years.  Their experience reflects in their classrooms as our students are well behaved and achieving to the best of their abilities.

dot How often do the students go to Mass?
Students attend Mass twice per week, on Wednesday and Friday.  Younger students attend Mass with an older student to help teach them the church traditions.

dot How does St. Louis School keep parents informed?
A weekly newsletter is sent home on Mondays to every family.  Communication is also accomplished via telephone, email and voice mail.  The school website "http://www.stlouisschoolwashburn.net" also contains information to keep parents updated.

dot Is there a parent organization?
The parent organization is called the St. Louis Home and School Association.  All parents and faculty at St. Louis School are members.  There are two meetings each year that all parents and staff are asked to attend.  The leadership of the Home and School meets once per month as needed when school is in session.

dot What kind of fund raisers does St. Louis have?
The Home and School Association runs several fundraisers during the school year.  Funds raised are used for enrichment activities for the students and to provide school support.  Some of the past fundraisersinclude:  Magazine Sale, Apple Festival Parking, Turkey Bingo, Christmas Cookie & Craft Sale, Easter Candy Sale, Fresh Fish Sale, Spring Rummage Sale, Mexican Fiesta and Big Money Raffle.
